IPHIGENIA - MARIA TSAKIRI / ΙΦΙΓΕΝΕΙΑ - ΜΑΡΙΑ ΤΣΑΚΙΡΗ

“But what could be so important about your life that you think it should be turned into a book?” I asked Iphigenia without thinking during our first meeting that winter of 1997. Everything she told me was terrible, excruciating, too horrible for words… Everything I heard hid so much ugliness within it that I wondered if I could handle it myself. Every word was “heavier” than the next. Together they razed and tore me down.
A thousand and one lives crammed into four decades that made me understand that across from me was a person with diabolical self-command and provocative courage. At the same time she was a desperately sad and melancholic woman with a frozen soul who dared to look me in the eyes and tell me about the relationship of shame that she had with her father as well as all the rest that stigmatized her being.
And so that is how the countdown to the publication of this book began. At some point Iphigenia and I parted our ways, but for about twenty years this book remained an unquenched wish, a wish to shout out the truth as loudly as possible and to save as many lives as we could. This is the truth that you are about to read.

«Μα τι τόσο σημαντικό έχει η ζωή σου για να γίνει βιβλίο;» ρώτησα αυθόρμητα την Ιφιγένεια σ’ εκείνη την πρώτη γνωριμία μας, τον χειμώνα του 1997. Όλα όσα μου είπε ήταν ανατριχιαστικά, φρικτά… Όσα άκουσα έκρυβαν τόση ασχήμια, που αναρωτιόμουν αν μπορούσα να τα διαχειριστώ. Κάθε λέξη πιο βαριά από την άλλη. Όλες μαζί ισοπεδωτικές.
Χίλιες και μία ζωές στριμωγμένες σε τέσσερις δεκαετίες, που με έκαναν να καταλάβω πως απέναντί μου έχω έναν άνθρωπο με διαβολεμένη ψυχραιμία και προκλητικό θάρρος· συγχρόνως, μια απελπιστικά μελαγχολική και θλιμμένη γυναίκα με παγωμένη ψυχή, που τολμά να σε κοιτάξει κατάματα και να σου μιλήσει για εκείνη τη σχέση ντροπής με τον πατέρα της και για όλα όσα στιγμάτισαν την ύπαρξή της.
Κάπως έτσι ξεκίνησε η αντίστροφη μέτρηση για την έκδοση αυτή. Μόνο που χαθήκαμε με την Ιφιγένεια. Και για περίπου είκοσι χρόνια η ιδέα του βιβλίου έμεινε μια ανικανοποίητη επιθυμία, ώσπου νίκησε η ανάγκη μας να φωνάξουμε δυνατά την αλήθεια και να σώσουμε όσο περισσότερες ζωές μπορούμε. Και την αλήθεια αυτή την κρατάτε στα χέρια σας.
