Eran: to fall in love, to love.
It is 766BC. Lygini and Iakinthos are hauled along with a crowd of monks to the Hippodrome where they are humiliated and then married by force. They both have secrets to hide, secrets that will mark their lives and determine the path of their odyssey.
Rodanos, an angelic and reckless lover of pleasures, but also bearer of terrible secrets, is focused on that which he considers to be a debt.
It is around these three figures and the mystery of the Sacred Torch, a mystery that could overthrow emperors and decades of politics, that this novel unfolds in the second half of the 8th Century, and against the backdrop of iconoclasm and daily life in Constantinople, Athens and Thrace, a unique era that is both unknown and fabulous. These characters are surrounded by a number of interesting secondary figures, including villainous Hermas, Kitin the cultivated slave, the Arkadi who raised a bear in the forest, theatrical Gorgonia, Fokas the patriarch with his team of Lions, and Aran the African eunuch.
The protagonists go to extremes, fall in love, live carelessly, give in to life as life gives in to them, are humiliated, crushed, rebounded, relegated to the mire, crushed, devoted to God or renounced, become victims to their image or moved to love by way of their soul. They must come to terms with with slander, war, intrigue, deadly enemies, a love-massacre, a nightmare, a dream and, above all, themselves.

766 μ.Χ. Η Λυγινή και ο Υάκινθος σύρονται μαζί με πλειάδα μοναχών στον Ιππόδρομο, διαπομπεύονται και τους παντρεύουν με τη βία. Κρύβουν και οι δύο επτασφράγιστα μυστικά, τα οποία θα σημαδέψουν τις ζωές τους κι εν πολλοίς θα τις καθορίσουν κατά την οδύσσειά τους.
Ο Ροδανός, αγγελοπρόσωπος, ριψοκίνδυνος, θηρευτής των ηδονών, μα και με φοβερά μυστικά να τον σφιχτοδένουν, είναι συνάμα προσηλωμένος σε ό,τι θεωρεί χρέος.
Γύρω από αυτούς τους τρεις ήρωες και το μυστήριο του Ιερού Στιχαρίου, το οποίο θα μπορούσε ν’ ανατρέψει αυτοκράτορες και πολιτικές δεκαετιών, κινείται η μυθοπλασία κατά το δεύτερο μισό του 8ου αιώνα με φόντο την Εικονομαχία και την καθημερινή ζωή στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, την Αθήνα και τη Θράκη. Σε μια μοναδική εποχή, άγνωστη και μυθώδη. Τους πλαισιώνουν αρκετοί δευτεραγωνιστές, όπως ο μοχθηρός Ερμάς, ο καλλιεργημένος δούλος Κιτίν, ο Αρκάδιος που τον μεγάλωσε στο δάσος μια αρκούδα, η θεατρίνα Γοργονία, ο πατρίκιος Φωκάς με την ομάδα των Λεόντων του, ο μαύρος ευνούχος Αράν και άλλοι.
Οι πρωταγωνιστές φτάνουν στα άκρα, ερωτεύονται παράφορα, ζουν ανέμελα, δίνονται στη ζωή και τους δίνεται, ταπεινώνονται, συνθλίβονται, ανακάμπτουν, ξαναπέφτουν στον βούρκο, καταρρέουν, αφιερώνονται στον Θεό ή Τον απαρνούνται, γίνονται θύματα της εικόνας τους ή οδηγούνται στο εράν διά του οράν της ψυχής. Έχουν να αντιμετωπίσουν συκοφαντίες, πολέμους, ραδιουργίες, θανάσιμους εχθρούς, έναν έρωτα-σφαγή, εφιάλτη και όνειρο και, πάνω απ’ όλα, τον ίδιο τους τον εαυτό.
