Η Πλατεία Ηρώων, η οδός Ήβης, η οδός Νύμφων, τόποι και δρόμοι ανάλογοι του τόπου και δρόμους της Αθήνας, μικροί, ασήμαντοι, λυπημένοι, τραγικοί, μα κι απέραντα τρυφεροί.
Έχουν πολλή σκόνη, πολύ βάσανο, πολλές γυναίκες, πολλά παιδιά, πολλή φασαρία και πολλή σιωπή. Σ’ αυτούς τους δρόμους γεννιούνται και πεθαίνουν οι επιθυμίες και τα όνειρα των ανθρώπων που έρχονται κάθε δειλινό με το γλυκό αεράκι και χάνονται κάθε αυγή με τη θλιμμένη σειρήνα της φάμπρικας.

Οι ελπίδες του νεαρού Λουκά, η νοσταλγία του ξεπεσμένου «Κόμη», ο αδιέξοδος έρωτας του μεσόκοπου Αγησίλαου, η γονατισμένη ζωή της εργάτριας Αργυρούλας, ο σκληρός Βλάσης και η εξαπατημένη Φρόσω, η απογοήτευση της Άννας που πιστεύει για δυο λέξεις τρυφερές, ο φιλότιμος Σπύρος και ο γοητευτικός Αλέκος που την πολιορκούν, αλλά κι η Θεατρίνα, ο χαφιές, ο τραμπούκος, οι παπατζήδες, οι πόρνες, οι ιδρωμένοι άντρες στα μηχανουργεία και οι γυναίκες που βρίζονται στα κεφαλόσκαλα προτού αγκαλιαστούν και σταυροφιληθούν ξανά αλλάζοντας λόγια συγγνώμης κι αγάπης.

Heroes’ Square, Ivis Street, Nymphs Street—places and roads like so many others in Athens—small, insignificant, sorrowful, tragic, yet endlessly tender.

They hold much dust, much hardship, many women, many children, much noise and much silence. In these streets, the desires and dreams of the people are born and die—people who arrive each evening with the sweet breeze and vanish every dawn with the mournful siren of the factory.

The hopes of young Loukas, the nostalgia of the fallen “Count,” the hopeless love of the middle-aged Agesilaos, the crushed life of the worker Argyroula, the harsh Vlasis and the deceived Froso, the disappointment of Anna who believes in two tender words, the honorable Spyros and the charming Alekos who court her—along with the actress, the informant, the thug, the card sharps, the prostitutes, the sweat-soaked men in the machine shops, and the women who curse each other on the stair landings before embracing and kissing the cross once more, exchanging words of forgiveness and love.
